Masaka SS Hostel Fire Linked To Religious Discrimination

On Monday this week early morning it was revealed that one of the residential hostels at Masaka SS caught fire and millions worth of students’ items vanished in ashes.

The hostel has been a residence for over 200 students. Fortunately none of them escaped with any injury since by the time the hostel caught fire, students were still awake as they had just came back from preps.

One of the students reported having heard something like an explosion inside the dormitory ceiling before fire spread and destroyed the entire block of the dormitory.

Police as usual started to investigate on what exactly caused the fire. However, according to some students who chose to remain anonymous, the head teacher has failed to handle the religious relationship as Muslims are allegedly oppressing Christians in the school.

Masaka SS is a muslim foundation school currently headed by Haji Musa Mpungu who joined them some six years back after Haji Ssendagire resigned as civil servant.

Some parents also say that Haji Mpungu has done nothing to cub this vice and probably might have been the cause of fire that caught the whole dormitory.

Parents are saying that the fire couldn’t haven’t been brought in by an outsider but students themselves who are tired of the vice of being discriminated might have done that.

Regional police spokesperson Ibn Ssenkumbi confirmed the fire but said already some people have been arrested for that. A one Sande Mutesasira, an old boy of Masaka Senior Secondary School is said to have  backed the students demand for the removal of Mpungu, saying the school was peaceful before he took over.

If this is true, this will not be the first time students are burning school property at Masaka SS as in 2007 they set fire on the school’s staff room claiming that the school had refused to renew DSTV subscription for them (students) to watch English Premier League.
