At least two UPDF soldiers attached to Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Aronda Nyakairima’s escort convoy have been confirmed dead following a deadly road accident in Arua District on Wednesday.
Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda told our on Thursday afternoon the accident was sparked by a car tyre burst.
“One of the pickups in Gen Aronda’s convoy had a tyre burst near Arua Township. The car rolled and we lost two soldiers,” said Ankunda.
He said other soldiers in the Wednesday convoy survived unhurt.
Ankunda further clarified Gen Aronda was not part of the convoy as he had traveled by air.
This website understands the army boss was on his way to Northern Uganda District for a “special military operation.”
Ankunda denied reports that Aronda had died in the accident, saying, “he is live and kicking; he is at his office working.”
The incident comes hardly a month when police boss Lt Gen Kale Kayihura survived an accident as he travelled to Gulu for Women’s Day Celebrations on March 8.
It later turned out the masterminds of the accident had planned to assassinate Gen Kayihura.
They were recently charged with attempted murder.
